Frida Kahlo – Beyond the myth – Mudec Milano

Frida Kahlo -Beyond the myth – Mudec – Milano

More than 60 years after her death, the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo is still setting the cultural agenda and be celebrated on the catwalks. A new exhibition in Milano is being dedicated “Frida Khalo- Beyond the myth”

One asks oneself, what is it about Frida Kahlo?

She has been a font of inspiration for many fashion designers, her artwork is still acclaimed as being imaginative, introspective and contemporary.

Take one fashion name, for example, Veronica Etro, who’s fashion collections since 2004 have been mostly inspired by this complex and tormented Mexican artist.

A bond to such extent that in 2014 Veronica Etro dedicated to Frida Kahlo an exhibition in Rome, and in 2016 her Spring Summer collection was a vivid tribute to Frida.

To these days, those same cheerful colours, floral embellishments, and Frida Khalo signature hue palette are still being injected on the catwalks.

Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana, Balenciaga, Burberry and many more have celebrated her.

We could say that Frida has influenced fashion before now. As early as 1937 her influence on fashion was recognised in an interviewed by Vogue titled “Senoras of Mexico”.

In 1938 during Frida visit to France,  Elsa Schiaparelli, honored her by designing a dress named “La Robe Madame Riviera”.

Perhaps, the inspiration can be found not so much in the complexity of the artist, but purely in the representation of Frida Kahlo, as the 20th-century artistic avant-garde and feminist icon. Her ability of self- introspection throughout her artwork leads one to believe the existence of a strong, determined woman. One with attitude and character but most of all a woman in acceptance with diversity. Her personality feels so very of “The moment” that we are living now.
