It has become the talk of the fashion world here in London, the opening of Balenciaga: ’Shaping Fashion’ exhibition at the V&A on May 27th, 2017.
The exhibition tells the story of a remarkable tailor’s apprentice in a small Spanish village who makes an incredible sartorial journey all the way through Paris Haute Couture royalty.
His incredible fashion career spans more than half a century. The V&A exhibition is focused on his creative output from the 50s and 60s, the most daring and innovative years of his career.
His iconic signature, like the Balloon dress, cocoon and square coats, envelope dresses, toreador-like beaded boleros, the peacock-tail dress will all be on show.
The V&A has the largest collection of Balenciaga in the U.k. initiated in the 1970s by the photographer Cecil Beaton, Balenciaga’s long lasting friend.
Described by Coco Chanel as “the only Couturier in the truest sense of the world” the exhibition will show the impeccable garment construction highlighted through a serious of X-rays.
The X-ray, created by artist Nick Veasey, shows hidden construction details that would be otherwise invisible and are displayed next to the corresponding garment.
